Differences Between Consulting and Transition Management

Both consultants and interim managers are hired to provide services and their expertise to clients, whether it’s for a project, an assessment, the restoration of a situation, or to address a specific problem. However, there are distinct differences between these two roles.

Consultants are typically brought on board to offer advice, recommendations, and solutions to a client’s business challenges. They act as advisers and project leads but rarely have decision-making power. Their primary role is to leverage their expertise to guide the client towards the best course of action. On the other hand, interim managers usually take on a leadership role within the organization, acting as employees with decision-making authority. They are not only hired for their expertise but also for their leadership capabilities.

While consultants are mainly focused on providing deliverables such as reports, recommendations, and strategic plans, interim managers are more about leading and managing the process of change. They are leaders who may also deliver specific outcomes, but their primary responsibility is to ensure the successful execution of transition plans, coordinate stakeholders, and manage risks.

Consultants work primarily to change the company by addressing aspects such as organizational structure, processes, tools, culture, and operations. In contrast, interim managers have the added responsibility of managing the day-to-day operations while leading the change. They are responsible for both the ongoing management of teams and the implementation of new initiatives.

In summary, while both consultants and interim managers provide valuable expertise and services to clients, their roles, responsibilities, and the scope of their work differ significantly. Consultants are advisers and doers, focusing on delivering specific outcomes, whereas interim managers are leaders who manage both the run and the change within an organization.

There are other differences between these roles, and I would be glad to discuss them with you.

As a client, don’t confuse roles and pick the right profile for your needs.
